After the town of Ingelheim am Rhein had come into being in April 1939 by the joining together of the previously separate communities of Nieder-Ingelheim, Ober-Ingelheim und Frei-Weinheim the idea of establishing a town centre with shops and a town-hall was developed from 1976 onwards. The new town-hall has been in use since 1982.

Sitz der Kreisverwaltung

In the town centre, between the town-hall and the station, the circular local administration building was built in 1994/5, and thus the centre of local administration was moved from Mainz to Ingelheim. Ingelheim has been the local administration town for the Mainz-Bingen district since 1996.

Thematic exhibitions, for example on the art of the South Seas, on Japanese coloured wood cuts, fauvism and expressionism, Viennese Biedermeier or the spirit of the fifties in Paris have inspired the visitors not only because of their exhibits, but also because of their conception and didactics.

The “Red Wine Village” which is in the romantic area around the Burgkirche (“Castle Church”) offers the visitors a colourful, varied and ambitious festival programme for a whole week. Along with the many items on the programme in the festival tent and on the open air stage, there is also no shortage of culinary delights at the Red Wine Festival.

Kaiserpfalz (“Emperor’s Palace”) – Museum and Visitors’ Centre

Museum bei der Kasierpfalz

The exhibition of the museum on François-Lachenal-Platz 5 in Nieder-Ingelheim gives information about the sojourns of Charlemagne in Ingelheim and in the Pfalz (“Palace”) he built here around the year 800. Furthermore it gives an insight into the prehistoric epochs, the Roman and the Merovingian periods in the Ingelheim region. For a number of years archaeological excavations have been undertaken in the Saal area, which make it possible to some extent to make a reconstruction of the various historical building stages of the Palace of Charlemagne – the Kaiserpfalz. The tourist development of the Pfalz e.g. the Aula regia or the Heidesheim Gate as well as the visitors’ centre give the visitor an impressive view into the previous history of the town. In the visitors’ centre of the town of Ingelheim those who are interested have a chance to gain information about the history of the Kaiserpfalz and amongst other things they can experience a virtual reconstruction of the Aula regia. Alongside this the computer-assisted information system gives a presentation on the (building) history of the Pfalz site on more than 600 screen pages. Four workstations are available on which the information system can be viewed. Large OHP demonstrations are possible.
