Roman Ingelheim
Archeological findings show that this epoch in the history of Ingelheim was lively. The focal points are two life-sized sculptures of a man and a woman. Who these two were and what was important for them - in life and death - can be comparted with other archeological findings in the region. When the copies of Roman clothing are shown to you, you will feel as if you have gone back in time to the Roman days.

A magnificent building, supported by a hundred columns

- Rekonstruktionsmodell der Pfalzanlage
That was how Ermoldus Nigellus in 826/28 described the Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim, which had been built a few decades earlier. As archeological findings confirm, Ingelheim was one of leading locations of Charlemagne's imperial palaces. What it looked like in those days and what Charlemagne used it is demonstrated in the museum. Afterwards during a circular tour through the Pfalz area there are mainly Carolingian buildings in the Kaiserpfalz.

Karl (Charlemagne), Otto and Fritz. Different periods and functions of the Kaiserpfalz
Three rulers influenced the appearance of the Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim through the whole Middle Ages: Charlemagne, Otto III and friedrich I Barbarossa. The alterations to the buildings they commissioned also changed the function of the Kaiserpfalz. It was first a representative building and it was a preferred place to celebrate church festivals and, in the end, it was a fortified enclave. How these various stages reveal themselves will be discovered during the circular tour.

Water is for washing. The function of water in the Pfalz area
The location was favourable geologically, because the Pfalz area was built upon numerous underground water veins. Nevertheless, Charlemagne had a water channel constructed from Heidesheim to Ingelheim, whith was a massive undertaking. How important water was, how it was used and how Charlemagne integrated water in his palace can be experienced during the tour. Fountains, wells and water channels come to life again. For those who enjoy walking, we recommend a walk along Charlemagne's water-supply route from Heidesheim and Wackernheim.
Bookable: throughout the year
Takes: 1½ hours (without the walk along the water channel)

Recycling in the Middle Ages. The case of the "Flügelpferd" or how scientists work
Reusing building materials was common throughout history. Large pieces were extremely expensive. One such piece, the figure of a winged horse, was in the Burgkirche (castle chapel) in Upper Ingelheim. Nowadays this valuable sculpture decorates the Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim. There are several clues that support this assumption. During the tour you can discover the work of scientists, who very often acted like detectives. Afterwards there will be other examples of "recycling" in the Pfalz area.

With a stone crown and later dethroned
The Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim was used throughout the whole Middle Ages, even after the spectacular periods of Carolingian and Ottonain rule. But the palace underwent a dramatic change in its significance and its function: rebuilding and turning into a fortified enclave and the use by the Augustinian choir foundation and it being "plundered" as a stone quarry. Even palaces have their destinies.
